Julia Metzler is currently pursuing her Master’s of Music in Opera from UCLA, and holds a Bachelor’s of Music from San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She is enjoying a blossoming career in her hometown of Los Angeles.
Ms. Metzler’s recent roles include Fiordiligi in Così fan tutte, (UCLA Opera, 2016), the Countess in Mercadante’s I Due Figaro, (UCLA Opera, 2015), and the roles of Ortensia, Ettalina and Stelladora in Musto’s Bastianello (UCLA Opera, 2015). In October 2013 Ms. Metzler appeared as Lady Billows in Albert Herring with Repertory Opera Company, in which Laurislist.net described her “powerful voice and passionate persona” as “perfect in the role.” In September 2013 she sang 2nd Lady in Die Zauberflöte with Center Stage Opera, and in April, 2013, she appeared with Pacific Opera Project as Marcellina in Le Nozze di Figaro. In 2011, Ms. Metzler sang Blanche de la Force inDialogues of the Carmelites at San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
Upcoming roles for Ms. Metzler include Micaëla in Bizet’s La tragédie de Carmen, (UCLA Opera, 2016), and the title role in Gustav Holst’s Savitri (Pasadena Pro Musica, 2016.)
In the summer of 2011, Ms. Metzler was invited to China to participate in I Sing Beijing, a groundbreaking summer program designed to introduce western opera singers to Mandarin as a lyric language. While in Beijing, she studied Mandarin and coached intensively with star Metropolitan Opera bass, Hao Jiang Tian. That summer, she made her debut at the National Center for Performing Arts with the China National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Gareth Morrell, in a program of Chinese music. Ms. Metzler returned to China in December of 2011 to perform a reprise concert, and returned again in Summer of 2014, when she made her debuts at the Hangzhou Grand Theater, the Suzhou Culture and Arts Centre, and the Great Hall of the People in Tian’anmen Square in Beijing. She has also performed in concerts of Chinese folk music at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall with the New York City Opera Orchestra, and in Paris at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.
Ms. Metzler has performed and been interviewed on the NPR radio show ‘From the Top,’ and was featured in the HBO Miniseries ‘Masterclass,’ in which she had the opportunity to coach with Plácido Domingo.
